Jordan Statement on Narrow Passage of Democrat Healthcare Bill

Washington, Nov 7 - Congressman Jim Jordan (R-Urbana) made the following statement on the narrow passage of H.R. 3962, the trillion-dollar government takeover of healthcare that passed 220 to 215 with 39 Democrats joining all but one Republican in voting no.

“During this healthcare debate, millions of everyday Americans called their Congressmen, spoke at town hall meetings, or marched on Washington to express their outrage over the prospect of turning their health care over to the federal government. Unfortunately, congressional Democrats ignored their voices and passed their trillion-dollar, 2,000-page government takeover bill in the dark of night.

“Democrat leaders only allowed 2 of the 216 submitted amendments to be debated and receive a vote. I am certain that the American people expect ideas from both parties to be considered, especially in such comprehensive legislation as this. Speaker Pelosi and the Democrats cannot be proud of the process by which they passed this bill.”

“I joined 175 of my colleagues in supporting a common sense alternative health care reform bill that reduced costs, protected the relationship between patients and doctors, and did not raise taxes on families or businesses. Though our plan did not pass, I still believe these long-term fixes we propose are needed to fix what is wrong with the health care system.”

“I was pleased to support a pro-life amendment to the health care bill that honored the fundamental truths that life is sacred, life should be protected, and taxpayer money should never be used to take the life of an unborn child.”

“People in our district are talking about jobs, but in Washington D.C., Democrat leaders seem focused on passing job-killing legislation like cap-and-trade and this federal takeover of health care. Unemployment is at a near 30-year high, and I will continue working to refocus the priorities of Democrat leaders in Congress on stopping the uncontrolled federal spending and beginning to work on turning this economy around to create jobs again."
